What is the makeup trend in 2024?

In 2024, we just want one thing, at least when it comes to our makeup. Enhance your look with airbrushed blush, ombré lips, and eyeliner. Experts believe that in 2024, makeup trends will revolve around the power of one. According to Tasha Reiko Brown, a cosmetic artist based in Los Angeles, we’re moving away from looks that “require a lot of moving parts” and toward more “easy to use” items.

Keeping things simple (foregoing a smoky eye, contoured cheeks, and bold lipstick all at once) does not imply abandoning bold makeup. (You also don’t have to bleach or bedazzle your brows, which we saw throughout 2023.) Ahead, makeup experts show you how to do more with less this year.

Meet the Experts:

  • Patrick Ta is a Los Angeles-based makeup artist and the founder of Patrick Ta Beauty.
  • Sheika Daley is a Los Angeles-based makeup artist.
  • Tasha Reiko Brown is a Los Angeles-based makeup artist.
  • Ash K Holm is a Los Angeles-based makeup artist.

Draw the Line

Keep your high-precision liners nearby because eye makeup is becoming more graphic. “Striking shapes, trendy reverse liner, and bold lines draw attention to the eyes,” according to Brown. Since seeing the sharp winged liner at Laquan Smith’s spring 2024 show and the marker-like striped eyeliner on Jil Sander’s spring 2024 runway, our mild cat eye has not seen the light of day.

Looking for an inky formula to try this out? Makeup artist Sheika Daley traced Lancôme Idôle Ultra-Precise Felt Tip Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in an arrow design on models at LaQuan Smith’s show, using the technique we deemed the “classic black turtleneck of liquid liners” in our 2023 Allure Best of Beauty awards. “Place a dot just outside the eyelids as your ending point, check for evenness, then draw out from lash line to dot,” according to Brown.

Better Than Bare

Skin tints replaced thick foundations in 2023, but it turns out we still prefer some coverage – without the cakey texture. So this year, manufacturers began to give us the best of all worlds: MAC, Covergirl, and Fenty Beauty recently released sophisticated formulas that provide coverage without sacrificing lightweight texture or finish.

Allure editors have already incorporated the new MAC Studio Radiance Serum-Powered Foundation into their makeup regimes. “It absorbs into my skin like a moisturizer while providing enough pigment to make my skin tone appear more even. “I’m even able to layer a little extra under my eyes to make my dark circles less visible,” says Allure editor in chief.

Get Dolled Up

Blush is returning to the apples of your cheeks after visiting nearly every other high point on your face. Experts refer to it as “doll blush”—a “youthful look, that adds definition to the face because of how the blush sculpts the cheekbones,” says Los Angeles-based makeup artist Patrick Ta. Brown recommends smoothing out the edges to produce a gentler gradient rather than packing on the pigment in a sharp circle (this is where you start to approach clown territory). We caught a peek of it after a wave of the TikTok-famous ombré concealer, a technique for diluting highly pigmented blush with face cosmetics to get a more natural effect.

Make Up For Ever, Patrick Ta, and Armani Beauty all provide airy blushes that create a cloud-like texture on their own. The Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Glow blush is a favorite among Allure editors (we awarded it Best of Beauty). “I love how easily it blends into my skin without leaving any harsh lines,” says Allure’s Deputy Digital Director Kara McGrath.

Go Monochromatic

Monochromatic makeup is also known as pumpkin spice, strawberry girl, and latte makeup on TikTok. “It’s one mood with a subtle shift in tones between the lip and the face,” says Brown, who predicts that the trend will revive single-color palettes and elevate multi-use color products such as Ami Colé Desert Date Cream Blush & Lip Multistick and Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder Flushed Matte Color for Cheek & Lip — two products that Allure editors have used.

Swipe Bright

Bleached brows and bedazzled arches have been on trend for months. It’s time for eyelashes to dance with color. Models in the Prada fall 2023 and AZ Factory spring 2024 shows wore long blue, pink, and purple falsies.

There is no need to reach for falsies and glue, however. New formulas like YSl Lash Clash and Half Magic Eyelectric Extreme Lengthening Mascara, as well as older staples like L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara, are available in blue, green, and purple, making them ideal for adding a pop of color instead of the traditional black or brown shades.

Ombre Lips

The 1990s are making a comeback, but with a modern twist. Ombré lips, a modernized version of the darkly-lined lip that was fashionable decades ago, have gained popularity on TikTok, and experts predict they will continue to trend throughout the year. “It’s all about looking at your natural lip colors and accentuating that,” Holm said. She uses two shades of lipstick in the same color family but slightly different tones, such as tan brown and rusty pink, before outlining her lips with liner. We love the Ere Perez Coco Crayon, which has a deep matte texture and mixes easily.

Add A Pop Of Color in Makeup

The ongoing trend towards minimal makeup does not imply that colorful splashes are disappearing entirely; the spring 2024 runways shown that a single pop of color is all you need to make a statement. Models at the Helmut Lang and Max Mara spring 2024 shows walked with nothing (on their faces) but a pop of color on their eyes or lips. Helmut Lang’s “pop” was a vivid crimson winged eyeliner, whilst Max Mara’s look was an understated cherry cola lip. Experts expect that an increasing number of people will finish their barely-there base with a bold flick of eyeshadow in a brilliant colour or a swipe of vampy lipstick.
